Every time we see an advertisement that uses the word Free we ponder….What is truly free? The latest ad that has come to our attention is an offer of Free Fish, with free delivery no less from Arkansas Fish Hatchery Express in Hot Springs Arkansas. The ad claims that due to a late summer spawn they have more fish than they could possibility know what do with and their loss is your gain. This sounds fishy to us.
When you call the phone number, you are told it’s actually more of a “buy one, get one free” kind of deal. Customers must purchase large quantities of fish to get the free fish. It is the ultimate “bait and switch”.
Customer complaints on file with the Arkansas BBB allege some of the fish are delivered dead. The company refuses to replace them or refund the customers money. Most complaints also allege the customer was threatened after disputing the advertised claims or contacted the company for a refund.
We advise caution when responding to offers that use the word “free” as a hook, the deal you reel in and catch could really stink.
